IT’S one of South Africa’s largest chicken producers, but for many of the minimum-wage labourers who clock in at the Sovereign Foods chicken factory in Uitenhage every day, working conditions are nothing to crow about.

WHILE more than 3000 employees walk through the gates of Sovereign Foods in Uitenhage each day, most are casual workers hired by labour brokers. These workers, many of whom have worked at the factory for decades, receive few benefits and have no union.

MANY Sovereign Foods workers risk their personal safety walking kilometres back home after their night shift ends at the chicken factory in Kruis River Road, Uitenhage. The company has shifts ending at 8pm, 10pm, midnight and 3.30am, which makes it difficult for workers who rely on public transport to find lifts home.
