YEARS of campaigning and complaining finally bore fruit at the end of last year when the Eastern Cape department of education (ECDE) gave the nod for renovations at the Hankey Primary School.
"It's finally happening,” said principal Gordon Walsh as phase one of the renovations kicked off.
The department gave the nod for the renovations after the school complained to the in 2006 about the conditions at the school.
In December last year 8 Alfdaf Constructors were awarded the tender of an estimated R23-million.
"We assessed the condition of the school buildings and decided to apply to the department”, said Walsh.
One of the buildings was inherited from the previous government. "The white building was there when I grew up so it's old and it has cracks to prove it,” added Walsh.
The renovation includes the building of a new multipurpose hall, a computer lab, a science lab, the upgrading of the rugby field and the building of new netball and tennis courts. It is a 20-month project and it is believed that the local community will benefit as work opportunities will arise.
"We only have four local people who work here at the moment but as the time goes we will require more people,” said project manager, Tony van Rensburg.
The renovations are set to be finished by December next year.
