THIS year’s Shavathon festivities in St Francis Village Centre last Saturday attracted a happy gathering of fun seekers all keen to support the drive to raise funds for Cansa.
People of all ages lined up to have their heads shaved or sprayed colourfully, with master of ceremonies for the day, fire chief Keith Donaldson urging everyone to join in the spirit.
"I think we can be very happy with the turnout for today,” said organiser Cindy Blake.
"We have had lovely support from local businesses and organisations this year which means that there has been a great variety of activities – something for everyone to enjoy.”
Highlights of the day included a demonstration by the children of the taekwon-do club, an impressive parade by the St Kromme sea cadets, and a gourmet cooking competition among chefs from The Links, Joe Fish in Cape St Francis and St Francis Tourism.
The competition for the potjiekos main-course dish was voted a dead-heat between Brad Castle of The Links and St Francis Tourism’s Warren Manser. However Joe Fish’s Craig Tait took the mystery basket competition for the best desert.
Stallholders from the regular mini-market added a market flavour to the busy entertainment schedule for the morning.
"So far I can confirm we have raised over R7200 for Cansa,” said Blake.
"But more will come in this week once the collection tins have been counted and pledges gathered. Every time we do this we learn more and gather better ideas, and we are already busy formulating a plan for a bigger and better event next year.”
