Sevens tourney for Bay

AN exciting new seven-a-side school rugby tournament will hit the Bay this month to showcase talented players and promote the game on a second-tier level.

The inaugural PG Glass All Saints competition will see 16 schools, including five development sides, go head-to-head on June 21 and 22 at St Dominic’s Priory in Miramar.

The event will be televised by SuperSport.

Host side All Saints is a relatively new team made up of players from St George’s College and St Dominic’s Priory High School.

The tournament has been modelled on IRB Sevens lines with four pools and four winning trophies – cup, bowl, shield and plate.

The event has been sanctioned by the Eastern Province Rugby Union whose officials will be in attendance to identify players for inclusion in their development programme.

"This is the real reason for us concentrating on the second tier division, since it is not everyday that these boys have the opportunity to show our local rugby union what they have,” said Veanne Falco, a member of the organising team.

Before the event, SuperSport presenters will hold a rugby development clinic and will appear at a question and answer session at the corporate dinner at Priory on June 21

"The main idea behind the tournament is that there is a group of people who are passionate about rugby and the development of the sport within the local community,” said Valco.

"Children learn different things on a sports field – thingslike being a team player, leadership, pushing your body and mind beyond your expectations if given a chance.”

The organisers have identified Ithembelihle Home of Safety as the official beneficiary of the tournament.
