Stores getting buzz-y in Christmas build-up

WITH less than a week to go before Christmas, shopping centres are bursting at the seams as shoppers attempt to beat the last-minute rush.

Cleary Park manager Kobus Bernardo said there had been a 38% increase in shoppers on Friday compared to the same day in December last year.

Overall, the centre was up 3.3% for the December 1 to 17 period compared to the same period last year.

"Our spending trend is most definitely essentials like food/groceries first and then branded goods and jewellery," Bernardo said.

Growthpoint Properties property manager Mariska Smit said business at Walmer Park had picked up since the weekend.

"The mad Christmas rush has definitely started.
