Resort rises from ashes

HOLIDAYMAKERS are flocking to the Eastern Cape, particularly fireravaged St Francis Bay. Hotels, bed-and-breakfast establishments, and backpacker accommodation are filling up quickly, while restaurants are reporting a busy season so far.

The small seaside town of St Francis has survived two disasters in just a matter of months to emerge once again as the Eastern Cape's favourite summer holiday destination.

In October, roads leading to the resort were closed after severe flooding. Then, last month, a fire gutted at least 75 buildings, including upmarket homes, restaurants and offices along the canals.

But now cars sporting "I love St Francis Bay" stickers are roaring into the town for Christmas and New Year.
