Former policeman shoots wife, himself

A security official allegedly shot his wife before turning the gun on himself in the couple's Rocklands, Port Elizabeth home on New Year's Day. Their bodies were discovered by the couple's 12-year-old daughter and a friend.

Stephanus Rautenbach, 43, formally attached to the SAPS Murder and Robbery Unit, allegedly shot his wife, warrant officer Tessa Steyn, in the head before killing himself at about 4.20am on January 1.

Steyn, 43,was employed by the Motherwll Police station.

Police spokesman Captain Stanley Jarvis said an inquest docket had been opened.
