SA’S roads ‘killing fields’

IN a tragic start to 2013, five people died in a road accident in Nelson Mandela Bay early on Tuesday, while around the country at least 18 others were killed and 17 injured on the first day of the new year.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu said a Mazda Drifter double cab bakkie travelling along Uitenhage Road towards Port Elizabeth spun out of control and crashed into two pedestrians.

"The two pedestrians died on the spot. The driver lost control of the car. It overturned, killing three of the five people who were inside it, including the driver,” he said.
