DURING the past weeks Samrec has responded to several calls from the public notifying us of seabirds in trouble. We really appreciate your assistance and ask all beach goers to notify us if they feel there is a bird needing help.

Our calls have ranged from a gull found on the N2, badly concussed, to young penguins unable to cope with the conditions out at sea. They were starving and weak, and considering how little time these birds have before extinction, every penguin saved is important.

The worst incident was, however, a giant petrel brought in from Bushmans River. He was very weak and sadly did not survive.

It was discovered that he died from lead poisoning. He had swallowed a bullet which had lodged in his small intestine.

These birds are scavengers and probably ate a seal which had been shot.

The ocean is no longer that wonderful place!

Anyone needing information about Samrec or wanting to report a stranded bird, please phone (041) 583-1830. We are here to help our seabirds.
