GALE-FORCE winds with gusts of up to 179km/h, according to the municipality , wreaked havoc in Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday, fanning fires, blowing out store windows, lifting roofs and bringing down trees.

A container ship was also swept loose from its moorings and into two other vessels by the wind.
Several people were injured by flying debris.

The fire, which broke out at about noon, is thought to have been started by people who were burning paper.

Firefighters were still at the scene last night in case of a flare-up.
