WITH the matric results hype done and dusted, analysis of last year's results reveals a surprisingly high number of Eastern Cape matric pupils – one in five of those who passed their national senior certificate exams – scored between 80% and 100%.
An analysis of the category of passes reveals that of the 61.6% who passed matric in the province last year, 21.2% passed in the 80%-100% bracket, while only 1.9% scored below 30%.
This is an improvement on 2010 and 2011 when the figures were 19.3% and 20%, respectively.
Some experts had expected the majority of passes to be in the mid-ranges – either in the 30%-40% or 40%-50% .
Of the 87763 matriculants who sat for their final exams last year, 54062 passed. Of that, 11461 achieved very high marks, which came as a surprise to some.
