Hitch-hiker held for drug possession near Grahamstown

07 January 2013
A hitch-hiker carrying a substantial amount of mandrax tablets in a back-pack has been arrested near Grahamstown, Eastern Cape police said on Monday (07/01/2013).

The drugs had an estimated street value of R240,000, said Captain Mali Govender.

Police were carrying out vehicle checks on the N2 highway on Sunday when they came across the man.

Police found 3000 mandrax tablets inside his back pack.

"He allegedly hitch-hiked from Port Elizabeth and was travelling in a maroon VW Golf, which was stopped by police,” said Govender.

More mandrax tablets were found wrapped in a newspaper. The 28-year-old man, who faces a charge of drug possession, is due to appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court soon. -
