WP farm workers run amok

TIRED of working like slaves, farm workers in the apple capital of South Africa ransacked stores and vowed to leave the fruit to rot on the trees if their demands are not met.

Grabouw residents in the Western Cape emptied shelves of their local Shoprite and when police shot at them with rubber bullets, retaliated by pelting them with stones.

The strike, which resumed yesterday after wage negotiations failed again, led to the arrest of 44 people.

Police spokesman LieutenantColonel Andre Traut said many were arrested for intimidation in Tulbagh and Ashton.
