Burns unit on brink of collapse

11 January 2013
Mkhululi Ndamase

THE Eastern Cape's only state burns unit is on the brink of collapse due to severe staff shortages.

So dire is the situation that doctors have warned that only patients with more severe burns may be admitted to Dora Nginza Hospital's burns unit if something is not done to rectify the situation soon.

The staff shortage in the Port Elizabeth Hospital Complex has also forced other units across the three hospitals – Dora Nginza, Livingstone and Provincial – to operate at stretched capacities.

The number of doctors at Dora Nginza's specialist unit has dwindled to one from five in the last year, raising concerns about the fate of the province's burn victims.

In a damning statement, 30 complex doctors detailed last month how some units were on the verge of collapse.
