I AM in full agreement with Sakhiwo Zamisa – we believe that South Africa's biggest need is mathematics.
Zamisa highlights the importance of maths for entry into further education and training of any sort.
Maths is a lot more than numbers. It develops the skills we require for managing all aspects of life. Maths awakens and expands the reasoning and thinking of a child, encouraging problem-solving. It allows adults to solve every day issues, reason with colleagues and overcome work challenges.
Numerical skills encourage sequencing and logical reasoning. Maths (or lack of it) seriously affects production in our country.
We appeal, too, to all mathematicians. We need you in our institutions, schools and communities for both the growth of mathematics and, ultimately, South Africa.
