GREG Butters and Wilanie van Zyl took the honours against their Eastern Province peers at the weekend, winning the under-18 boys and u-16 girls singles titles in the EP KeyHealth Series tennis tournament at the PE Club.
It was a good tournament for the fourth-seeded Butters, who defeated Joshua King, the top seed, 6-4 6-3 in the u-18 singles final and also took the doubles title in tandem with Shaun Watson. They beat fellow EP player Jandre Lessing and his KwaZulu-Natal partner Nikolai Manchev 6-1 6-3 in the final.
EP player Carli van Onselen excelled in the girls u-12 division, taking the singles title with a 6-4 6-0 result over Western Province's Lize-Alet Morkel. Van Onselen also reached the doubles final with WP's Vanessa Chigariro, but went down to Francisce Crouse (EP) and Morkel 6-2 7-5.
The girls u-16 singles final was contested by two of EP's most promising prospects when Van Zyl came up against Morgan Dickason. Van Zyl held the edge to win 6-2 6-4, adding to the East London title she won last week.
Van Zyl was also the doubles winner, partnering Boland's Cindy Dorrington to a comfortable win over Phillipa Liasides (KZN) and Reze Opperman (EP).
In the girls u-14 doubles final, EP's Kaylin Bouwer and singles runner-up Corin de Waal (WP) took the title with a 6-4 6-1 win over Imaan Hassim (Gauteng North) and Minette van Vreden (WP) 6-4 6-1.
EP boys u-14 doubles players Dylan Puchert and Heinrich Willemse beat WP's Jurgen Badenhorst and Charles Morkel 7-6 (5) 6-3 in the final.
