Challenging start to school year for some

PUPILS at a Nelson Mandela Bay primary school are in for a cramped start to the academic year tomorrow after parts of their school building collapsed due to strong winds battering the city this month.

Four classes at the prefabricated West End Primary School in Saltville have been rendered useless by the winds, leaving at least 70 in need of alternative classrooms.

The city's school infrastructure backlog – currently at about R1.3-billion – has a number of schools on the priority list for rebuilding and repairs.

Principal Ronnie Matthys said two classes had been cordoned off by the Public Works Department since 2009 after they were deemed unsafe.
