15 January 2013

THE popular son of a Port Elizabeth school principal died early yesterday following a freak New Year's Day swimming accident in Port Alfred.

Lyall Beadon, 29, who crushed a critical neck vertebra after diving into a wave which slammed him into a sandbank during a sunrise swim, leaving him paralysed, died of cardiac arrest at the Aurora Hospital in Port Elizabeth.

His devastated family, including his father, St Dominic's Priory junior school principal Laurie Beadon, were struggling yesterday to come to terms with his sudden death, which occurred between 2.30am and 3am.

Lyall, who was treated in the intensive care unit of the Life Beacon Bay Hospital in East London following the accident and then transferred to the Aurora Hospital on Thursday last week, was paralysed from the chest downwards.
