State to oppose Cunningham bail

15 January 2013
BRENT Cunningham, who is at the centre of an assault case involving his 36-year-old girlfriend, will bring a formal bail application on Friday.

Cunningham, 21, allegedly beat Shireen Ballan on the night of December 27.

Ballan, who was present when Cunningham appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court on Thursday, was admitted to hospital with serious injuries after the attack.

However, a bombshell was dropped when the prosecution announced that she had asked them to withdraw the charges.

Cunningham, who faces a charge of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm, has been receiving moral support from his sister, Trishke, who has not missed any of his court appearances.

Yesterday, prosecutor Benedict Wilson said the state opposed bail and intended going ahead with the case despite Ballan withdrawing her statement. – Hendrick Mphande
