Eskom hearing disrupted by protestors

A Nersa public hearing into Eskom's proposed tariff hike was adjourned this morning after a large group of protestors affiliated to Cosatu started singing and chanting during one of the presentations at the Port Elizabeth's Summerstrand Hotel.

The protest began during a presentation by the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber who are rejecting Eskom's application to increase electricity tariffs by 16% over the next five years.

The group of just under 100 protestors all dressed in red and black, are asking for the hearing be made more accessible to the majority of residents in Nelson Mandela Bay.

Protestors say they will not allow the hearing to continue until Nersa allows it to reconvene in the city's townships or northern areas where as they believe poor residents will be hard-hit by the increase.

Cosatu also wants hearings to be held in the rest of the province.
