Champions draw two top players as EP golf competition gets under way

THE ITEC Eastern Province Golf Union Premier League swings into action this weekend with several players partaking in the annual roundabout between clubs.

The biggest move is that of Fezekile Kana and Andile Adam from Humewood to champions PE Golf Club A.

PEGC have dominated the league since 2000 and that stranglehold looks set to continue.

EP golf captain Naldo Claassen and stalwart Dennis Smith have joined Uitenhage, strengthening their depth considerably. Five clubs will contest the top league this year with Midlands being added to the mix. Midlands will include players from inland Eastern Cape golf clubs, for instance Graaff-Reinet and Cradock, and they will be selected according to the EPGU order of merit.

They face a baptism of fire this weekend when they travel to Uitenhage to take on champions PEGC A and Uitenhage. The match between PEGC A and Uitenhage will be an intriguing one, and a win for either of them could set up the remainder of the season quite nicely.

In the other match on Sunday, Humewood A take on PE Golf Club B at the links.

THE first Order of Merit tournament for the year will be the Cleveland Golf EP Amateur, which will be played at St Francis Links over two weekends, starting on January 26 and finishing on Sunday, February 3.

Entry forms are available at all golf clubs and entries close at noon on Tuesday. Players are urged to enter early as the field will be limited.

Following that, the Eastern Province under-23 and Mid-Amateur Championship will be played at Uitenhage Golf Club on Sunday, February 17.
