Champs set for open water swim

18 January 2013
THE Eastern Province Open Water Swimming 10km and 3km championships take place on Sunday as part of the Secbands EPA Swim Challenge Series at Marina Martinique.

Defending champions Dominic Greeff and Rebecca Newman will find it hard to hold off Port Elizabeth's Olympic swimmer Jessica Roux, who is keen to regain the title she won in 2011. She could not defend it last year due to other commitments.

The 10km race starts at 8.45am in the Marina, with the leading swimmers expected to finish in about two hours, 10 minutes.

The Swim Challenge Series includes a 7.5km and 5km swim starting at 9.15am before the EP Championships 3km swim, which begins at 11.30am, together with a 1km swim. Defending 3km champions Andrew Fisher and Megan van Wyk have yet to enter the open water events and could find it tough.
