St Albans riot toll up as third prisoner dies from injuries

THE death toll from Friday's riot at the St Albans Prison outside Port Elizabeth has risen to three after an inmate died of his injuries in Livingstone Hospital on Saturday morning.

The inmate was among 17 seriously injured prisoners who were admitted to hospital after a gang fight in a crowded jail cell spread to six other cells and spiralled out of control.

Two died on the scene and 48 others were treated at the prison's clinic.
