When matric trumps 35 years practice

I AM over 50, and seeking employment, and was over the moon when an agency asked me to come in for an interview, thinking, wow someone needs a mature experienced person for their business.

When the agency saw that I did not have my matric, but had obtained Grade 10, followed by a year's secretarial course, and 35 years' practical experience, said, "sorry we won't be able to send you for the interview, as the client specified the applicant MUST have a matric."

I was flabbergasted! Where in heaven's name is the logic in that? What would a matric supply more than practical on-the-job experience – and this for a receptionist position?

I had all the other necessary qualities needed, but unfortunately they would not be getting the opportunity of interviewing me and seeing that I would otherwise be perfect for the position. Regretfully, their loss. I am now phoning around enquiring about Abet training, but am being sent from pillar to post.
