WHILE dismal performances by many sectors weakened the economy in the recent past, the tourism industry has done very well .
Figures from Statistics SA showed the picture in the formal tourism's accommodation sector was rosy in September and October.
The accommodation industry grew by 6.9% to R4.2-billion in the three months ended November last year compared with the three months ended November 2011. The sector faced pressure in November when the number of stay unit nights sold showed a negative growth of 4.8% year on year – in contrast to the 1.2% increase displayed between September and October.
The total income for the accommodation industry grew 1.3% y/y in November last year.
