A BRILLIANT sixth-wicket partnership by Matthew Thorp (103 not out) and Chadd Drake (40) rescued Kingswood after they had slumped to 67 for five in their schools cricket match against Stirling in Grahamstown at the weekend.
Their efforts boosted Kingswood's total to 243 for six, to which Stirling replied with 152 for eight to earn a draw.
After Drake was dismissed, Sean Biggs joined Thorp at the crease and they effectively took the game away from Stirling with their positive batting. Kingswood declared in the 52nd over, once Thorp had reached a superb century, leaving Stirling 56 overs to reach their target.
From the outset, it was clear the visitors were not interested in the run chase and it became a game of survival.
Kingswood struck early, with Brad Haller claiming two wickets, but, in the end, Stirling managed to hold on for the draw. At the close, they had reached 152 for eight, with Kingswood unable to break a determined ninth-wicket partnership.
