Bay stadium field invaders get off lightly

TWO supporters escaped serious sanction after illegally invading the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium field during the Africa Cup of Nations soccer match between Ghana and DR Congo on Sunday.

The norm at major stadiums, be they cricket, rugby or soccer, is for security personnel to perform an arrest, resulting in the offending fans spending a night in the cells. Some cases have resulted in prosecution.

But the two unruly DRC supporters were, according to local organising committee spokesman Sipho Sithole, merely thrown out of the stadium during the opening Group B match.
