AUTHORITIES are refusing to release the names of the three inmates who were killed during a riot at St Albans prison on Friday.

About 250 inmates, some of them armed with knives and glass, became embroiled in the fight, which was sparked by a dispute between members of the notorious 26 and 28 gangs.

Two inmates died on the scene and the third died in Livingstone Hospital on Sunday. Dozens more were injured.

Now, despite the families having already been informed of the deaths, Correctional Services provincial commissioner Nkosinathi Breakfast has declined to release the victims' names.
