NMMU racing car off to Germany

23 January 2013

THE Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) racing team is hoping to finish among the top 10 at this year's German Formula Student competition.

The event, being held at the Hockenheimring Formula One circuit in August, will pit 40 teams from around the world against each other in the Formula Student Electric category.

Initially, 101 teams underwent a rigorous online registration process consisting of a quiz that challenged both the team's technical knowledge and understanding of the competition rules, and the NMMU team made the cut with two places to spare at 38.

The team is hoping to improve on their previous race in 2011 where – with their car, DibaOne, built by engineering students – they finished 66th out of 75 teams.

They are the only African team in the event dominated by European teams, mainly German.
