Tunisia striker sinks Algerians

23 January 2013
TUNISIA striker Youssef M'sakni helped his side to beat Algeria 1-0 with a late goal at the Royal Bafokeng Stadium in Rustenburg last night.

Tournament favourites Ivory Coast had taken an early lead in Group D having earlier secured a last-minute 2-1 win over Togo in the group's opening game. Both Algeria and Tunisia began the game wanting to match the Elephants' performance and not allow the favourites to gain the advantage of going into the next round of matches as the only side to collect all three points.

The match between the north African neighbours was also the last of the eight matches in the first round of the group stages. It was the first day that saw both matches producing winners.

The first stage of the tournament did not arouse much excitement as it saw only two other matches producing winners – Mali (against Niger) and Ivory Coast – with the rest of the matches ending in draws.

Up next in Group D on Saturday will be the Ivorians against Tunisia, while Algeria face Togo. – Chumani Bambani
