THE Education Department has stepped in to intervene in the ongoing feud between parents at the Kuyga Intermediate School over mother-tongue tuition.
Tempers flared this week when coloured parents – whose children predominantly speak Afrikaans – hauled their children out of class in protest.
On Wednesday, they burnt tyres in front of the school and African parents – whose children speak Xhosa – retaliated by intimidating the coloured teachers.
There are 469 Xhosa-speaking pupils and 399 Afrikaans speakers. The Greenbushes school has 15 Xhosa teachers, including the principal, and three Afrikaans teachers.
