City defends its finance system

THE interim finance chief of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality has denied the city's books were not credible, blaming instead the supply chain management (SCM) unit, which oversees tenders, for a damning report.

In his response to a scathing attack by the auditor-general, Selwyn Thys said there were no financial misstatements related to his department that were not dealt with.

This comes after the AG in his report for the 2011/12 financial year said he had considered withdrawing from inspecting the city's books because they were not credible.
