WHILE plans are on track to host Africa's oldest open water swimming event – the Spar River Mile – at the Sundays River in Cannonville again this year, organisers hope the event can return to its home at Redhouse for its 90th anniversary next year.
Now in its fourth year at Cannonville, the event was moved in 2010 due to growing concerns about the dangerously high pollution levels in the Swartkops River, where it had been swum since 1924.
Michael Zoetmulder of event organisers Zports said as soon as the Swartkops was declared safe the event would be moved back to Redhouse.
"We are just waiting for the water to be cleared as suitable. The Sundays River has been an awesome alternative venue for the event but the Swartkops River will always be its home. It would be wonderful for us to return there for our 90th anniversary."
