Multi-hued NMMU

ANYONE who has watched student rugby's Varsity Cup will know that NMMU's first XV is not a "lily-white team" ("Level the playing fields, Madibaz," January 28).

For the first match of the 2013 Varsity Cup next week against UCT, NMMU has eight black players – seven African and one coloured – who have been selected on merit and not simply to meet the designated quota of players. Seven of these players are in the starting line-up.

Varsity Cup rules require six black players, with at least three starting. We have exceeded this prerequisite in the past five seasons of the Varsity Cup. As shared by vice-chancellor Prof Derrick Swartz ("NMMU committed to an equal, socially just society", January 28), we are committed to transformation. We invite Mr Matika, and readers generally, to see for yourselves when our Madibaz take on Wits in a televised Varsity Cup match at our stadium on February 11. There is great unity in our wonderful diversity.
