Anguished mother sues cops for R2.5m

A MOTHER who called police to talk to her teenage son who had been drinking with friends instead of going to church, was left a broken woman after a posse of 10 police reservists cornered the 17-year-old when he tried to run away and then shot him in the head, a Port Elizabeth court was told.

Two years later, the shattered woman – Kamesh community leader Jacoline Maart – prayed for death, her days haunted by visions of her son, Angelo, being shot and calling out for her as he lay dying.

Maart, who is suing the police for R2.5-million in damages, carries a heavy burden of guilt, blaming herself for having her son "murdered".

The court will hear final argument today.
