Somali spaza shops attacked by youths

A SOMALI spaza shop was torched and nine others were ransacked during a suspected xenophobic crime spree in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage, throughout Wednesday night.

By yesterday morning, 17 shops were closed as owners feared they too would be looted.

Police spokesman Warrant Officer Gerda Swart said "several" foreign-owned businesses were looted by groups of "youths" from about 8pm on Wednesday.
