PHYLICIA Oppelt has been appointed editor of Sunday Times‚ taking over from Ray Hartley‚ who has been at the helm for almost two years.
Ms Oppelt‚ who has edited The Times‚ Business Times and Daily Dispatch‚ will take over from March 1.
Mr Hartley will take a two-month sabbatical and is expected to take a senior position within Times Media, the group to which The Herald and Weekend Post also belong.
"The name of a successor to Oppelt as editor of The Times will be made in due course‚” Times Media MD Mike Robertson said.
"Phylicia has been an outstanding editor of The Times‚ taking it to a leadership position in the all-important Gauteng market. It is a testament to her skill and dedication to the craft of journalism that she becomes the first woman editor of South Africa’s leading newspaper‚” Mr Robertson said.
