JUNIOR surfers in the Eastern Cape have two events in their region to look forward to when the popular Billabong Junior Surfing Series kicks off later this year.
Seal Point in Jeffreys Bay and Nahoon Beach in East London will host two-day events in the series, which starts on March 2-3 in Durban.
The East London event takes place on April 6-7, followed by Cape Town on August 24-25 and Jeffreys Bay on September 21-22.
The series will return with some exciting format changes and massive prizes. The series carries on the proud tradition set by Billabong that has already seen 43 events take place and almost R1-million awarded in prize-money over the last 16 years.
This year the series is presented by Bos Iced Tea and they are excited to be involved in the premier junior surfing series in the country.
"We are delighted for the opportunity to support and get involved in surfing at a grassroots level. Events like the Billabong Junior Series is where the future surf pros are shaping their careers," marketing director Marie van Niekerk said
The series this year will comprise boys under-12, u-14, u-16 and u-18 divisions, as well as girls u-14 and u-18 divisions.
There is also an elite u-20 invitation-only division, with surfers selected via online voting. Six of South Africa's top u-20 surfers will be invited to compete in each event. They will be joined by the winner of the u-16 and u-18 divisions for boys, and the winner and runner-up in the u-18 division for girls, to make up the numbers in this category.
The series will be awarding R750000 in money, prizes and giveaways.
In another innovative concept, Billabong will also offer six one-year sponsorship contracts to the series winners in each division. Should the series winner turn down the sponsorship offer, the prize will be offered to the next deserving surfer.
The sponsorships include, coaching, photo incentives, contest entry fees, contest incentives and products.
