Farming town faces water crisis

06 February 2013

ADELAIDE residents have urged the government to speed up plans to build the long-awaited Fox- wood Dam, saying they fear the small farming town is on the verge of a water crisis.

The Nxuba Municipality, however, has tried to allay concerns of a water crisis, saying not only is the town experiencing enough rainfall, but the Amathole District Municipality, which supplies them with water, has contingency plans in case of a shortage.

Worsening the residents' fears is that the water in the existing dam supplying the town has dwindled to well below full capacity and that large parts of the town were without water and electricity for 10 days during the festive season.

But Nxuba municipal manager Siphiwo Caga said this was because of a burst water pipe in December as well as a hailstorm which damaged one of the power lines.
