Traffic cop in court for bribery

07 February 2013

A NELSON Mandela Bay traffic officer was released on bail yesterday after his arrest for soliciting a bribe from a motorist. Senior municipal traffic officer Mbulelo Ngwenze appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate's Court for allegedly taking the R300 bribe on Tuesday.

He was released on R1000 bail pending further investigations.

Ngwenze, 51, was arrested in an undercover operation on the M4 after he pulled the driver over for talking on his cellphone.

After Ngwenze demanded the bribe, the motorist agreed to pay him later.

The driver then reported the incident to the traffic department, which notified the Hawks.

He will appear again in court on March 22.
