Citizens must take back power: Ramphele

07 February 2013
By Sam Mkokeli

Citizens need to grab their power back from unaccountable politicians so they can restore SA to the "country of our dreams”‚ academic Mamphela Ramphele said on Thursday (07/02/2013) morning.

She was addressing the Benoni Aurora Rotary Club‚ while speculation intensifies that she will launch her own political party‚ with an announcement expected as early as next week.

She said South African citizens faced poverty and despair as the dream of freedom faded.

There was poverty under apartheid but South Africans could then "look forward to freedom and the promise of freedom”.

The African National Congress (ANC) had conflated the state and party‚ she said‚ and party bosses were not accountable.

A campaign would be launched soon to get a million signatures supporting a change from the current electoral system based on party lists. That had to be the main agenda.

"We should be on a campaign for a million signatures. That has to be the first order of business to change the electoral system‚” she said.

"You will soon be asked to sign‚” she said‚ answering a question from the audience about how this campaign would be started.

The lack of accountability had reached high levels‚ where officials were building mansions "equal to none”‚ "in a godforsaken village”.

Politicians were a law "unto themselves because you and I are not present in the process of governance”‚ she said. - © BDlive 2013

Was Faku not suspended on full pay for three or four years pending the outcome of the inquiry? This then resulted in him getting a promotion to another position of higher authority to widen his tenderpreneur possibilities. How we love the ANC and how they look after their cadres. Shame old Julius must have not paid his bribes to the ANC head honchos because he got thrown out. Oh well lets us take this tiny glimmer of hope Mamaphele Ramphele is offering and maybe it will fan into a small flame that may ignite into a war for peace and no corruption. Unless of course she gets offered a big enough bribe and shuts up.

At last a voice of reason,a glimmer of hope, need more people of her calibre standing up and telling this inept government that things will be changing....pity a few more of our business leaders had the balls to say it how it is.

Prof Rhampele these are excellent ideas. Our problem though is that the ANC has gone beyond the point where any chance of a return of power to citizens is gone, other than by revolution. Take the Zuma tapes for example. The courts have repeatedly found in favour of their release and Zuma himself and the NPA simply ignore this. You or I would be sitting in jail until we obeyed the Court - Zuma knows he is untouchable. It starts small - we have our own example in the Bay where we have now been waiting years for Faku to be properly investigated under the Kabuso findings. Jump up and down as much as we like, the citizens will not see anything happen. Instead Faku has been moved upwards into a position of power in the Province.
