Arrests in crooked cops probe

IN a clampdown on corruption, members from the Hawks unit arrested two Gelvandale detectives in Nelson Mandela Bay yesterday following a year-long investigation which revealed that many criminal cases had allegedly been fraudulently withdrawn and closed.

Members from the Organised Crime division of the Hawks raided the detective offices in Thorogood Street, Korsten, and arrested the detectives for defeating the ends of justice and corruption.

By lunchtime, detective sergeants Weziwe Lupa, 35, and Babalwa Kondlo, 39, had both appeared in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court and been released on R2 000 bail each. The case was postponed to March 1 for further investigation.
