DEEPLY shocked by the savage rape and murder of Anene Booysen, a compassionate Port Elizabeth attorney has put together a groundbreaking initiative which is offering free legal and other assistance to rape victims.
As the country was reeling following the brutal gang-rape and killing of the Bredasdorp teenager, attorney Andre Vlok did not join in the many conversations of outrage.
Instead, he quietly put together a team of lawyers, counsellors, psychiatrists and doctors, acquired a dedicated phone line and e-mail address along with appointing a person to coordinate everything, and then put out a carefully worded message.

This is encouraging and gratifying to know when the norm seems to be money up front before cases are taken on. Even if we get more lawyers going ahead with cases using their own resources to start the proceedings so we have movement and quicker results releasing the client's cash to pay back, it would help a lot. Otherwise justice can be obstructed. From the lawyer's perspective there is this continual cycle of putting in finances and getting them out and it makes no sense in thinking that there is a starting point which is the client putting up the cash.
