Bombers on song in cup

18 February 2013

AFRICAN Bombers fed off their singing fans to clinch a hardfought 35-26 win against a physical Welkom Rovers outfit in their opening Cell C Community Cup rugby match at Zwide Stadium on Saturday.

The visitors threatened to take control, early on, but it was Bombers who went into the break leading 19-7 after flyhalf Coyi Banda slotted four penalties and converted a try by Sizwe Twane. He had picked up a loose ball to score under the poles. Rovers' efforts were rewarded with a Jaco Pistorious try, converted by Pieter Strydom.

Bombers played against the wind in the second half, but camped in Rovers' territory for the first 10 minutes. It took a Xolela Mbembe try to open up the game after Loyiso Bopi did the hard work when he received the ball deep in his half and sliced through the defence.

Rovers, though, were not about to sit back and Hennie Prinsloo forced his way over the tryline for Strydom to convert.
