Must speak out in churches for what's right

IN response to "EC churches brought to knees by bitter feuds" (February 18) in which George Irvine says "Churches who break unity go against Jesus's own prayer" – define "breaking unity". Are you suggesting that injured parties keep silent?

Would Jesus of Nazareth even recognise the hierarchical, patriarchal institution which is the church? An institution filled with racist attitudes, sexist teachings, materialistic values, gossip, bigotry, hypocrisy, intimidation, dishonesty, in short abuse!

"If no leader objects and no one rebels the wrongs will last forever" – someone has to take courage and intervene. If it means resorting to the law, so be it. The truth will set you free.

I agree with Sr Joan Chittister OSB who says: "My fear is not the people who organise to leave the church it is the amount of disillusionment and depression that is out there because of the church itself. You have people who love their faith but cannot support these acts by the institution."
