Premier gets tough over shut schools

EASTERN Cape premier Noxolo Kiviet has lambasted principals and parents who close down schools in protest against the government, saying they are playing a reckless political game with the future of their children.

Delivering her state of the province address in Bhisho on Friday, Kiviet said only Basic Education Minister Angie Motshegka and MEC Mandla Makupula had the authority to close a school.

Several schools in different towns in the province have been shut – and later reopened – by angry parents protesting against the ongoing teacher shortage crisis which has forced children to go, sometimes for months, without teachers.

"I further wish to emphasise that neither teachers nor school governing bodies have any authority to close schools and send children away. If they do that, there will be consequences.
