Guns protect us on suburban patrol

IT is quite clear that it is foolish people commenting on the gun control laws, such as Roland Williams ("Don't blame availability of a firearm", February 20). What about those neighbourhood watch members who start patrolling the streets after dark?

The only reason why we have to do patrols is because the rotten ANC has failed in its duties. We will continue to take to the street with our firearms to rid our neighbourhoods of the scum.

What were Justin Lavery and I meant to do when nine men came running out of a yard after trying to burgle a house at 1.30am? We opened fire as they would have run us over in their numbers and stolen our firearms.

We have had situations where the security companies and the SAPS could not control the situation, and the members of the neighbourhood watch had to step in to control the crime.

Hats off to all the neighbourhood watch members who put in the hours fighting crime in Port Elizabeth. Please continue to carry your firearms on patrol.

Donald Gray, neighbourhood watch head, Mount Pleasant, Port Elizabeth
