'Millions of bus money wasted'

27 February 2013
Rochelle de Kock

FORENSIC investigator Vusi Pikoli has released an explosive report detailing how about R8-million for Nelson Mandela Bay's new bus system was squandered on salaries, gadgets, furniture and a music concert that never happened.

In a draft forensic report given to the municipality on Friday, Pikoli also raised concerns about possible political interference from ANC regional chairman Nceba Faku with one of the companies awarded the contract to run the bus system last year. However, Faku has denied any wrongdoing.

Pikoli was appointed by the national Treasury and deputy mayor Nancy Sihlwayi in November to investigate possible irregularities in the bus system.

He emphasised that the 36-page report, expected to be tabled in council soon, could change pending comments from councillors and the various people and companies it fingered.

You hit the nail on the head, Thirsty. But there is also the question of what it is about the Kabuso Report that the ANC is so scared of in terms of letting us know the final findings on all the recommendations it contained, and acting on them? It is logical (and maybe that is where the problem lies) for the NMBMM to clean out the horsesh*t in the stable that is still stinking after all this time. Bring out the final truth. That will clear those who are innocent whilst enabling the ANC to finally dump those who are not, thereby demonstrating a desire for clean and open government. It would also end the pathetically juvenile power struggle between the ANC/Civic Groups; Faku/Wayile etc... that has paralysed service delivery in the Metro for so long. How about pushing for that, Derek Hanekom? You seem to have to intervene when the kindergarten gets too out of hand every now and then: Rather issue instructions from National level to sort it out one way or the other. Better still, chuck the lot out so we can have an election : the people in NMBMM at all social levels are sick and tired of this "Administration" (for want of a better word). Or doesn't the ANC believe in democracy when it knows it won't get the majority vote?

What Is not surprising is that Mr. Faku gets fingered by this report, maybe Vusi Pikoli should be handed a copy of the Kabuso report for some back ground information on how things get done by our Mr. Faku. To The Ref, the opposition are there just vote for them, but remember they are still in the minority so cannot stop the ANC,s shananagans and corruption, we just need to strengthen the DA get them into a position of governance!
