St Albans warders attacked

27 February 2013
Shaun Gillham

THREE Correctional Services officials were attacked by inmates at St Albans Prison outside Port Elizabeth yesterday, bringing to seven the number of prison employees injured at the facility so far this year.

Yesterday's attack, which follows a massive gang fight at the prison during late January in which three prisoners died and 65 others were injured, took place shortly after 8am while inmates were being served breakfast.

The injured officials, who were stabbed with a "sharpened object", were taken to St George's Hospital in Port Elizabeth for treatment. They are reported to be in a stable condition.
