Bay harbour just cruising

The docking is in line with the port's vision of attracting more passenger liners to the city.

This luxury liner carries only 446 passengers, ensuring an intimate atmosphere on board. The ship caters exclusively for those aged 50 and over so there's a laidback vibe for the seniors.

Ship staff member David Rosell Calvo showed The Herald around since the captain of the ship, Kess Spekman, was taking a rest after the trip from Durban.

"We departed from Cape Town on February 15 for our journey around the Cape. We stopped in East London, Mozambique, Richards Bay, Durban and then docked at Port Elizabeth.

"For every city we have an itinerary so there is always lots of activity on and off the ship. Today the cinema theatre presents Invictus. In the library there is always someone available to assist with DVD loans or audio books. Table tennis is always open for those folks who crave a little fun," he said.

Calvo said the Quest Quartet played at dinner with gentleman hosts available for those female passengers travelling alone.

MV Quest for Adventure is a small ship with a big personality, its hefty 10 decks containing everything from a hair salon, health spa and photo gallery to restaurants, an indoor pool and tennis courts.

Every cabin has air-conditioning, a writing desk or dressing table, a TV, DVD player, hairdryer, binoculars and telephone.

The ship was empty during the visit as most guests were participating in excursions including visits to the Addo Elephant Park, Pumba Game Reserve and a city tour of memorials.

"At the moment, there are mainly British passengers aboard the ship so it's good to get them to experience the attractions that Port Elizabeth has to offer," Calvo said.

Staff captain Vitaliy Goncharov received a plaque from the harbour master, Brynn Adamson, on behalf of the MV Quest for Adventure to recognise the liner's first dock in the Bay.

The ship, which left Port Elizabeth last night, will stop in Mossel Bay before returning to Cape Town tomorrow.
